Overview
The Department of Pathology at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute is seeking an experienced Ph.D. scientist with an interest in research pathology, research administration, and project management. The Scientific Research Manager will work with the Chair and Business Office of the Department of Pathology using their scientific knowledge to assist with project management and tracking, scientific strategy for the department, talent acquisition, oversight of research programs, scientific writing and editing, and special projects and events. The successful applicant will have the ability to lead multiple projects and must demonstrate excellent judgement in prioritizing complex and sometimes competing activities.

Responsibilities
- The Research Project Manager will report directly to the Chair of the Pathology Department to develop and implement strategies that will ensure consistency in project progress and accountability in research activities conducted at DFCI.
- Maintains responsibility and major decision-making authority for day-to-day operations and supervision of multiple research groups including the Burns lab, Pathology Core Lab, and oversight of the other labs within Pathology.
- Responsible for the development and maintenance of project tracking systems, progress reporting, deliverable tracking, and reporting of variances and development of contingency plans to keep project milestones on track. Prepares and presents status reports to key stakeholders.
- Collaborates closely with investigators to develop, design, and implement research protocols, study procedures, and data analysis plans.
- Assists with all aspects of new assay and new protocol development. May be asked to interpret complex data analyses.
- Works with the Department Chair and leadership in establishing and evaluating scientific strategy and goal setting for the department (including core labs) and in implementing department strategic initiatives. May also assist with developing tools and guidelines.
- Provides scientific writing and editing to support project and Chair duties, such as and protocol, grant, and manuscript drafting and promotion recommendation letters.
- Brings greater visibility to the department including maintaining and improving department’s external and internal web pages.
- Adds to the intellectual environment of the department and institute by developing seminar series and other scientific events for department faculty and new investigators at DFCI.
- Plays a key role in fundraising for the department from philanthropic and industry sponsors. Will work with department faculty to gain understanding of their portfolio of projects and opportunities and collaborate with the Innovations and Philanthropy offices on sourcing funding for departmental scientific priorities.
- Partners with HR in talent acquisition and oversees recruiting and onboarding of faculty and staff.
- Manages faculty recruitment, searches, promotions, and academic appointments for faculty, in collaboration with Harvard Medical School (HMS) departments.
- Serves as a scientifically knowledgeable resource for the Departmental Administrator and participates as an active member of the business office team. Provides strategic planning leadership, goal setting, and implantation of department initiatives for business office.
- Partners with the department Research Operations Manager to implement strategic plans for operations, space, and equipment.
- Trains research staff and fosters productive communication between research teams and PIs.
- May be responsible for scheduling research team meetings and conference calls, facilitating mailings and other project-related administrative tasks.
- Performs other duties, as required, including special projects.

- Ph.D. required
- 5 years’ experience with technical knowledge in pathology is required, including prior training in diagnostic surgical / anatomic pathology and/or expertise in research histopathology, including immunostaining, immunofluorescence, or spatial biology. Experience in an academic institution is preferred.
- Project management experience
- Supervisory experience is strongly preferred
- Excellent judgement and demonstrated ability to prioritize complex and sometimes competing activities.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, including outstanding scientific writing and editing skills and a demonstrated interest in this work.
- Exceptional people management and organizational skills
- Demonstrated ability to lead multiple projects including developing and meeting scope-defined deliverables and required key performance standards.
- Must have an expert knowledge of and commitment to research ethics and the responsible conduct of research.
- Competent in primary Microsoft Suite applications, for example, Word, Excel, and Outlook. Experience with software for data and image analysis and illustrations is a plus.
